This chapter presents the research project “Heritage Digitalization: Improving Visitor Experience and Site Management for World Heritage Sites.” This project was funded by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation in Oman and lasted for more than two years, from January 2023 until February 2025. The main goal of the project was to digitally document Bahla Fort, the first World Heritage Site inscribed in Oman and in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). During the implementation phase of the project, the UNESCO World Heritage Centre announced the Dive into Heritage initiative. As part of the implementation of the “Dive into Heritage” initiative, the first workshop was implemented through the collaborative efforts of the UNESCO Chair for World Heritage and Sustainable Tourism Management in the Arab Region at the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech), UNESCO World Heritage Center, and the Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage (ARC-WH) (ARC-WH, 2023). This training was the first workshop on digital documentation for World Heritage in the Arab region. The workshop was followed by three days documentation mission in Bahla Fort. Some of the technologies employed during the documentation mission included laser scanners, photogrammetry, drones, and surveying tools such as total stations. Moreover, to augment visitors’ experience, 3D models, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and 360 videos were developed for Bahla Fort. The project outcomes were exhibited at national and international platforms, including the “Opportunities for Heritage: Fostering Innovation, Conservation and Sustainability” conference held in Oman and the 46th World Heritage Committee hosted in India.
