Modern heritage includes the architecture and urbanism products of the modern era; it is a rich legacy that needs to be recognized. It is, however, susceptible to socioeconomic and political conditions that have put it under serious threat. In the second half of the nineteenth century, Alexandria was a cosmopolitan city. It was home to foreign residents who contributed to the city’s architectural styles. Heritage hotels of Alexandria are an example of hospitality provision that offers tourists a unique experience. In the context of the UNESCO Recommendation of Historic Urban Landscape adopted in 2011, these historic hotels are an example of modern heritage that needs to be documented, preserved, and revived. The study highlights Alexandria’s modern heritage, focusing on heritage hotels of the city. A number of hotels were built at that time; some have totally disappeared, and some have obtained a new function, while others are still operating. The research thus aims to highlight challenges facing identifying, preserving, and documenting this rich legacy as well as the role of new technologies in this process. The study analyses the significance of these hotels within their urban setting and the consequences of their loss on the local community.
