Developing Traditional Handcrafts Products: An Exploratory Approach Conference Theme: Fostering Innovation
摘要
This study aims to highlight the main concepts related to traditional products and the extent to which developments can occur to elevate handcrafts that carry cultural identity and celebrate authenticity, specifically in the Saudi Arabian cultural context. The authors relied on analytical and inductive methods obtained from their literature review and workshops that were based on open discussions with stakeholders and relevant decision-makers. Crucial concepts were identified, such as the appearance dimension of crafts (e.g., using raw and natural materials, applying handmade techniques, and maintaining the original look of the craft itself). The cultural semiotic dimension and other concepts (local identity, historical references, heritage, and storytelling) emerged as well. As a result, the authors propose a list of action points and an in-depth discussion on handcrafts development, which can occur through design innovation that necessitates a harmonious balance between maintaining cultural heritage and adapting to contemporary demands. The implications of this research are significant for policymakers and educators in preserving heritage crafts and expanding their reach, fostering a sense of pride and economic growth through artistic and cultural expressions.
