Evaluating the Potential of the Metaverse: The Chinese Perspective
摘要
This paper explores the evolution of the Metaverse in the People’s Republic of China, analysing its development through the lens of national policy and regulation and international strategy. More specifically, it will be outlined how, through the implementation of the Cybersecurity Law, the Data Security Law, and the Personal Information Protection Law, this country is facing issues related to digital sovereignty, data control, and cybersecurity. Emphasizing the distinctively state-centric nature of China’s approach, the study also outlines how the government has introduced the e-CNY (or digital yuan) and what role blockchain and infrastructure technologies have in constructing a domestically governed digital ecosystem. Special attention is given to the Digital Silk Road in the context of the Belt and Road Initiative, as an extension of China’s ambition to foster interconnectivity in the Eurasian region. Finally, the paper discusses the challenges facing China’s so-called ‘Chinaverse’, including issues of technological dependence, platform interoperability, and international perception.
