The expansion of education in the Islamic Republic owed to the functional system they inherited from the Pahlavi. The chapter explores this, focusing on schoolbooks. It explores Pahlavi’s legacies and traces the trajectories of change in textbook production since 1979, as situated in the politics of authorship. It historicises the textbook war of 1999 and the conflict over narratives of the past and, by extension, hegemonic superiority in historical interpretation, religion and politics. The chapter shows how this conflict culminated in the fundamental reform of education after the Green Movement of 2009, which had a considerable impact on the status of education.
