‘Sons of the Soil’ Conflicts in India’s Northeast
摘要
This chapter argues that the bedrock of the problems in India’s Northeast lies in a heightened sense of ethnic identityEthnic Identity of those living in its constituent parts. Conflicts arise as groups seek to defend, extend, or take advantage of their identities which, for a variety of reasons, they feel is under threat. In general, the NE of India feels neglected by the Government of India in New Delhi which, in turn, generates movements within different parts of the region for a separate “homeland”. In developing this point of view, the chapter discusses in detail events in four (of the regions seven) states which have seen the most militant activity: Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, and NagalandNagaland.
