As mentioned, Sergio moved to Larchmont in 1938 with her friend Ann Batchelder, where she lived in a small villa surrounded by greenery not far from the sea. The pair would remain there for the duration of the war and beyond, until 1952 when they moved to Vermont, Ann’s home state. Larchmont was a pleasant town in Westchester County, northeast of New York City, a place many Italians fleeing to America to escape racial or political persecution took up residence. They formed a small group that soon began to meet regularly. They included, for example, Giorgio (“George”) Funaro from Leghorn, who later became the trusted accountant for many of his fellow countrymen who had taken refuge in Manhattan; the composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, who emigrated to Los Angeles in 1941; and Amelia Rosselli, mother of the Rosselli brothers, accompanied by her two daughters-in-law and her grandchildren.
