Antifascist at Last!
摘要
Apart from a few initial statements of sympathy for Mussolini, Sergio avoided exposing herself politically for the entire first year and a half she spent in America, from July 1937 to late 1938. But her relations with Italian diplomatic representatives in the US, in particular with the consulate in New York, remained cordial during that period of time. Where’s the proof? Turn to the New York Public Library and consult the Italian edition of a book published by our protagonist in Rome in January 1937, Dall’Intervento all’Impero. Cronologia del fascismo. The dedication, written in blue pencil, reads: “To Comm. Gaetano Vecchiotti with sincere friendship, Lisa Sergio. New York 1938.” Unfortunately we do not know the exact date, but the year reveals that even after landing in the US the journalist continued to have warm relations with Vecchiotti, the Italian consul in New York who was obviously a spokesman for the regime.
