The EUDR seeks to mitigate deforestation by regulating the access to its commodity market. Thus, implications on international trade (and, more specifically, on producers and exporters) are expected as producing countries, from inside or outside the EU, may have to adapt to the new norm. This includes, for instance, products’ loss of competitiveness due to an increase in their cost, displacement of value chains, difficulty in accessing markets, and overburdening of small and medium-sized enterprises. This section analyses both these potential implications and its discussion in the World Trade Organization as the global institution for trade-related matters. It also assesses the adoption of other potential mechanisms for dispute resolution in the case of contentious scenarios, notably bilateral agreements, private international law and grievance mechanisms.

摘要
