This chapter explores the decade from 1955 to 1965, a period defined by the paradoxical relationship between intense geopolitical turmoil and transformative medical progress. While the world faced the threat of nuclear annihilation, highlighted by the Space Race and the Cuban Missile Crisis, the same atomic science was being repurposed for healing. Key advancements in radiation oncology emerged during this time, including the development and first clinical use of the linear accelerator (linac) at Stanford and Hammersmith Hospital, which revolutionized cancer treatment. Simultaneously, Richard Ernst’s pioneering work on Fourier transform nuclear magnetic resonance (FT-NMR) laid the mathematical foundation for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a critical tool in modern radiotherapy. The chapter interweaves these narratives of conflict and medical breakthrough, illustrating how a decade shadowed by fear became a crucible for life-saving technology.
