Beyond the Box: The Societal Impacts of Product and Packaging Design
摘要
This chapter examines the intricate relationship between product and packaging design and their societal impacts, emphasizing the need for adopting a societal perspective in design and management processes. In the introduction, we present a general overview of product and packaging design and their evolution to modern-day practices. In the following section, we explore the topic by highlighting the importance of product lifecycle, durability, and end-of-life disposal, as well as the effect of product design on social welfare and consumer well-being. Then, we address the environmental challenges posed by packaging waste and examine the use of ecological materials and the implementation of recycling practices. We also elaborate on the societal benefits of sustainable packaging design and ethical considerations. From a consumer perspective, we discuss consumer expectations and responsible consumption, including how needs and values influence design decisions. Additionally, we highlight the role of technological innovations, including their societal benefits and challenges, and the impact of smart packaging solutions. To conclude this chapter, we provide a summary of key insights and reflect on future trends in product and packaging design from a societal perspective.
