The chapter critically examines the discourse surrounding Russian-speaking youth in Latvia in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. By treating youth and generation as discursive constructs, the study explores how Russian-speaking youth are represented in some public opinion polls and political discourse post-2014. Through a critical discourse analysis lens, the chapter reveals the dual-subordinated positionality of the Russian-speaking youth, subordinated both to the authority of adulthood and to that of the titular nation. It critiques the tendency to understand the Russophone youth through the prism of binary temporalities—either celebrating their future potential to fulfill hegemonic expectations or fearing their value alignment with those of the older generations of Russian speakers. The chapter also highlights the symbolic power of language in misrepresenting minority youth and in imposing behavioral expectations, particularly during times of conflict. Ultimately, it calls for greater recognition of their present realities beyond the canopy of hegemonic hopes and expectations.

摘要
