After the Johnston study (JAMA 284:2901–2906, 2000), TIA is not a discrete disease separated from CVA. Alarmingly, 10.5% of TIA at ED had CVA < 3 months, half of those who got CVA had it <48 h from TIA. Use ABCD2 score (Table 40.3) to risk stratify TIA. HINTS is for posterior CVA (Table 40.9). Prognostic scores are ICH (Table 40.11) and PLAN score (Table 40.12).
