Animals are a problem for novelists, not least when there are billions of them, and billions dead. By way of concluding, this brief chapter considers potential futures for the meatfiction, from Jonathan Franzen’s neo-realism, which struggles to pair individual activism with the wide-scale crises that concern his characters, to the role meat has played in recent speculative fictions. Honing in on Deb Olin Unferth’s Barn 8—a chicken story with a long literary legacy—I consider the ways in which the novel form can encompass both the individual and the species, one life and too many, and whether in doing so the novel can still work.
