This chapter explains the theory of containment, in that containment is derived from the branch of human and spatial geography. Traditionally used to describe the policies to exclude and divide in detention and island hotspot contexts, the term ‘containment’ used in the migration context refers to EU’s power to regulate migratory movements through administrative, political, or legal measures.
