Relational Integration Through Team Sport: Bonding and Belonging in the Wellesley-Jarvis Soccer Tribe
摘要
The unique relationships that form among members of a team have long been of interest to social scientists. As Goffman’s (1959) writes: “It is apparent that individuals who are members of the same team will find themselves, by virtue of this fact, in an important relationship to one another […] and among teammates, the privilege of familiarity may constitute a kind of intimacy” (82). But what is it about playing team sport specifically that breeds this intimacy? And what is the influence of these intimate bonds on players’ wider social lives? I answer these questions in the context of my study, by focusing on the socio-relational aspects of youths’ soccer participation on the neighborhood level. Here I show how their experiences playing competitively on the Jarvis CI high school team—when understood in conjunction with their program involvement at the Wellesley CRC—facilitated unique bonds and attachments. I term this amorphous group-form: the Wellesley-Jarvis Soccer Tribe.
