After a brief review of the historical development of offshore windWind, the notes review the basic aerodynamic aspects of windWind energy energyEnergy conversion. These include the one-dimensional momentum theory, which permits to derive a theoretical efficiency limit of the conversion process, and the blade element momentum theory, which provides a design methodology to approach such limit. Next, some considerations are given on the operational aspects of maintaining such an optimal aerodynamic efficiency in the field, with a description of the typical turbine control system, and the adjustments that are necessary when turbines are clustered in windWind farmsWind farm.
