Case Studies in Urban Planning and Disaster Risk Reduction in Southern Africa
摘要
Comparative city case studies provide practical insights into the challenges and opportunities of integrating DRR into urban planning. This chapter examines Durban, Maputo, Harare, Lusaka, Gaborone, and Windhoek, outlining risk profiles, institutional responses, and community engagement efforts. Cross-cutting themes include weak governance, informality, infrastructure fragility, and climate-induced risks. At the same time, local innovations such as participatory coastal management in Durban and water resilience strategies in Windhoek offer valuable lessons. Synthesising these experiences, the chapter identifies regional patterns and emphasises the importance of institutional capacity, community agency, and context-sensitive planning for advancing resilience.
