How Do Disinformation Campaigns around Migration and Refugees’ Impact Public Perceptions of Humanitarian Responsibility in South Africa?
摘要
South Africa has emerged as a regional power which leads to it being an attractive destination for many fleeing less stable and authoritarian regimes in the area. This chapter explores how the issues relating to migration have become politicised and instrumentalised. Based on data collected from social media platforms during the period leading up to the election, we analyse how disinformation campaigns related to migration and refugees are used to manipulate public perceptions of humanitarian responsibility in South Africa. With the communication environment becoming extremely febrile during election campaigns with comes increased extremism. Our data shows how the framing of foreign nationals as scapegoats, to blame for broader socio-economic challenges and governance failures, is utilised to deflect attention and counter governments facing accountability.
