Elections are generally significant in any democratic dispensation. It is the engine room of representative democracy. It allows the electorates to choose their leaders periodically. Nigeria, since its return to democracy in 1999 has enjoyed uninterrupted civilian rule for the past 24 years, the longest in its checkered political history. The 2023 General election was a defining moment in the history of Nigeria’s election and was fiercely contested. The chapter discusses the trajectory of the 2023 Nigerian General Election, focusing on public participation, media, and outcomes. It argues that the 2023 General Election was one of the most divisive elections in the political history of Nigeria. The electorate was sharply divided along ethno-religious lines and this affected the eventual outcome. Drawing on primary (oral interviews, focus group discussions and analysis of speeches) and secondary data from contemporary academic and media sources, we reveal that the 2023 Election witnessed widespread voters’ apathy, attributed to the poor socio-economic status of the electorate and low voter education. We further reveal that the outcome of the election hinged on primordial forces such as religion and ethnicity. Unfortunately, like previous elections, the 2023 contest was not devoid of electoral malpractices, violence, and thuggery. The study therefore concludes that the 2023 Nigerian elections followed the previous pattern of elections and for Nigeria to witness transformation in its electoral system all stakeholders must make deliberate efforts towards restructuring the system.
