Cone Beam Computed Tomography for Temporomandibular Joint Disorders and Diseases

This chapter reviews the role of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in diagnosing and managing temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and diseases. CBCT provides high-resolution, three-dimensional imaging of osseous structures with lower radiation exposure than conventional CT, making it the preferred modality for hard tissue assessment. Clinical applications include evaluation of degenerative joint disease, inflammatory arthritides such as juvenile idiopathic arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, synovial chondromatosis, metastatic disease, and neoplastic or pseudotumor lesions. Limitations in soft tissue imaging are noted, with MRI remaining the gold standard in such cases. CBCT’s detailed visualization aids in accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring of TMJ pathology.
