Strategic Entrepreneurship in Global Business Environments: A Comparative Framework of Hidden Champions

Hidden champions are increasingly recognized as pivotal players in global markets, far beyond their traditional German roots. This paper reframes hidden champions as a global entrepreneurial phenomenon shaped by distinct institutional and environmental contexts. Through a novel typology encompassing four business environments, emerging economies, post-socialist transitions, innovation-oriented EU states, and geopolitically fragile regions, we explore how firms navigate structural challenges in human capital, institutional trust, and financial infrastructure. Our comparative analysis reveals how hidden champions strategically adapt through lean innovation, selective internationalization, vertical integration, and embedded workforce development. These firms demonstrate that global competitiveness can emerge from local constraints through contextually embedded strategies. By extending the conceptual foundations of hidden champions to diverse ecosystems, this study advances a more differentiated theory of niche entrepreneurship and global firm resilience. We conclude by outlining present and future-oriented policy and research implications aimed at fostering the growth of hidden champions across varied economic landscapes.
