Balancing Operational and Embodied Carbon in Renovation of a Portuguese Office Building

This paper examines the carbon impact of renovating Portugal’s aging building non-residential stock, focusing on the trade-offs between reducing operational energy use and increasing embodied carbon. Common retrofits—such as window replacement and HVAC upgrades—lower energy demand but introduce materials with high embodied emissions. In the context of global warming the study emphasizes the need to address both operational and embodied carbon to meet 2050 decarbonization goals. Using whole life cycle carbon (WLCC) analysis, the paper identifies renovation strategies with the greatest carbon savings. It considers grid decarbonization and future climate scenario as an important part of discussion.
