Circular Integration of Recycled Construction and Demolition Waste into Urban Road Pavements

The use of recycled construction and demolition waste (RCDW) from building rehabilitation offers a sustainable alternative for urban road pavements. This paper investigates the application of RCDW in the unbound granular layers of flexible pavements, in line with the principles of a circular economy. To evaluate the mechanical and environmental performance of recycled aggregates derived from RCDW, a comprehensive laboratory testing program was conducted. Based on the results, full-scale experimental sections were constructed to assess their performance at a real scale. These pilot sections were equipped with instruments and monitored over time to evaluate the materials’ mechanical properties. As a result of this research, a catalogue of technical solutions was developed, outlining suitable applications for incorporating RCDW into urban road pavements. The catalogue proposes pavement structures for urban roads. It promotes resource efficiency, reduces landfill waste, and supports sustainable construction practices within the context of a circular building environment rehabilitation.
