Digital Collaboration and BIM-Based Reality Capture: A Case Study from KEA’s 5th Semester Architectural Technology and Construction Management Programme

This paper shares a hands-on educational experience from the fifth semester of the Architectural Technology and Construction Management programme at KEA—Copenhagen School of Design and Technology, where students explore renovation through digital tools and teamwork. At the start of the semester, around 30 international students collaboratively engaged in the digital documentation and detailed BIM modelling of a historical building scheduled for refurbishment. Students employed accessible and innovative reality-capture tools, notably laser scanning technology combined with smartphone-based LiDAR and augmented reality applications, resulting in accurate digital representations and comprehensive BIM models. These models were then coordinated using cloud-based collaboration platforms, integrating a Common Data Environment and simulating real-world workflows in building rehabilitation. The pedagogical approach adheres closely to Danish national ICT standards, grounding the educational experience firmly in professional practice while maintaining engagement through practical applications. Throughout the process, students not only gained technical proficiency in digital collaboration and BIM management but also developed critical competencies in communication and coordination reflective of actual industry practices. Collaboration with external stakeholders and simulated industry-driven requirements further enhanced the authenticity and relevance of the educational experience. The paper reflects on the learning outcomes, challenges, and potential of integrating digital workflows into renovation teaching. It also offers insights into how this type of project can help shape future professionals who are comfortable navigating both construction and digital innovation in an increasingly interconnected and sustainable industry.
