The warfare drone has emerged as a prevalent theme in the realm of political visual arts, following the 9/11 attacks. Many artists and exhibitions have explored this subject and its multifaceted dimensions. Primarily focusing on surveillance and power dynamics, these endeavors underscore the relevance of artistic commentary on human rights. Additionally, there is a significant emphasis placed on the aesthetic treatment of appearance and experience. Both of these aspects, in particular, can not only evoke an atmosphere of the ‘Sublime’ but also exemplify the ‘Uncanny’ through the unsettling juxtaposition of potentially beautiful elements in the representation and dreadful weapons. When analyzed closely, the characteristics of the artistic examination of the drone can be translated to the transgressing of boundaries in the realms of space, time, and the tangible—which are key concepts in the Gothic. By incorporating contemporary drone theory and analyzing selected artworks, this chapter aims to demonstrate how applying a Gothic framework—as showcased in three fundamental texts of the genre—sheds light on the intersection of aesthetics, morality, and human rights. This perspective reveals how drones, as instruments of surveillance and remote violence, erode privacy, perpetuate systemic inequality, and challenge accountability. The Gothic framework unpacks these power structures and ethical dilemmas, emphasizing the human cost of such technologies, particularly in marginalized communities subjected to their impacts. Moreover, the motifs and concepts of the Gothic are frequently employed across various artistic mediums—whether literature, film, or visual art—as both a literal and figurative vocabulary for exploring themes of fear, control, and transgression. This occurs even when the work is not explicitly labeled as Gothic. This framework makes the boundary between the self and the other visible, revealing the underlying motivations and strategies used to construct, enforce, or blur this divide. By exposing these tensions, the Gothic lens highlights the psychological, social, and existential consequences of drone warfare, underscoring its broader implications for human rights and global justice.

摘要
