The chapter explores how the findings of a critical self-study can serve as opportunities for resistance and persistence against oppressive ideologies, contributing to efforts towards social transformation. Building upon the aims of professional improvement and the advancement of equity, the chapter argues that research results should explicitly connect the analysis of professional practice in a critical self-study with broader socio-political contexts and relevant movements towards social justice. Thus, findings are temporary conclusions that necessitate ongoing appraisal, judiciously grounded in (and often quoting from) data sources themselves. This appraisal frequently emerges in the discussion section of journal articles and dissertations. In critical self-study, findings are held relative to deficit ideologies, equity endeavors, and opportunities for pedagogical and methodological innovations pertinent to teacher education and other contexts. Drawing on the concepts of political resistance and persistence, the chapter demonstrates how critical self-study findings can function as imaginative possibilities to counter neoliberal narratives, hate-based ideologies, and other systems antithetical to inclusion, democratic governance, and social justice. The chapter provides suggestions for evaluating findings in consultation with a critical friend, examining relevance to diverse professional contexts, and assessing vulnerability in the reporting of research. The chapter includes a re-analysis of the author’s previous self-study to illustrate an appraisal of the research findings with attention to critical matters and issues. The chapter concludes with prompts, exercises, and suggested readings to support the reader in their critical self-study research.

Critical Self-Study Research Findings: Enabling Equity Through the Appraisal of Professional Practice

  • Adrian D. Martin

摘要
