Masvingo Province in southeastern Zimbabwe contains over 77 Zimbabwe-type sites, of which 31 are described here, including the prominent Great Zimbabwe. These settlements are influenced by varied topography, rainfall, and vegetation, and are often located along river valleys linked to ancient trade routes. The stone-building culture emerged from local environmental and social dynamics, later enhanced by long-distance trade. Oral traditions offer limited clarity, though some link Great Zimbabwe’s decline to migrations and cultural shifts. The first written record, from 1552, describes Great Zimbabwe as a mysterious stone fortress. Archaeological evidence supports a succession from Great Zimbabwe to Khami and ties with the Torwa and Mutapa polities. Most sites feature enclosure walls typical of the Great Zimbabwe tradition, highlighting the region’s complex precolonial history.
