With various environmental concerns and growing demands to search an ideal candidate for food packaging applications, biopolymers have garnered immense attraction to replace the traditional plastic-based materials used in the food packaging. These biopolymers consist of favourable properties i.e. biodegradable, biocompatible and non-toxicity and thus they are extensively applied in the design and development of food packaging materials. Among the large pool of biopolymers, pectin has started to evolve as a prime candidate for this application. Pectin is a low-cost polysaccharide having good film forming ability, bioactivity and biocompatibility with a distinctive oxygen barrier capacity. These properties help to increase the expiration date of foods. Furthermore, addition of bioactive agents in the pectin films focuses on the development of prolong shelf life as well as secure quality and safety of foods by limiting contamination of bacteria. In this chapter, we will review state-of-the-art methods of embodying bioactive materials into pectin-based films and development for food packaging applications. The addition of these bioactive materials in pectin films improves microbial resistance and also influences the functional properties of the packaging films. The efficacy of different classes of bioactive materials e.g., metal nanoparticles, phenolic compounds, essential oils and other bio-polymers have been discussed in the later sections of the chapters.

摘要
