The field of research and innovation in packaging materials is currently undergoing significant transformation, driven by an increasing awareness of sustainability and environmental conservation. Among the various materials being explored, starch stands out as a promising candidate for eco-friendly packaging solutions. As a naturally occurring polymer, starch is sustainable and abundant and offers cost-effective alternatives to conventional petroleum-based packaging materials. Its biodegradability and renewability are crucial in addressing pressing environmental issues, thus reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. However, despite these advantageous properties, the application of starch in the packaging industry faces certain limitations. One of the primary challenges associated with starch-based materials is their relatively low mechanical strength, which can compromise the durability and reliability of the packaging. Starch materials often exhibit inadequate barrier properties, making them less effective in preserving food quality and extending shelf life. Several strategies have emerged to tackle these drawbacks to improve starch-based films’ performance. One approach is the modification of starch itself, which can enhance its physical and chemical properties. Incorporating various reinforcing agents, such as natural fibers, nanomaterials, or synthetic polymers, can bolster the mechanical strength of starch films. Another effective strategy is blending starch with other polymers to create composite materials that maintain the environmental benefits of starch while improving performance. Exploring starch as a potentially active and intelligent packaging material is gaining traction. This chapter reviews recent advancements in starch-based films, focusing on methodologies to improve their mechanical and barrier properties. It highlights innovations in active and intelligent packaging for food applications, noting that using different fillers and starch sources can significantly improve thermoplastic starch properties. A multidisciplinary approach involving chemistry, materials science, and food technology is crucial for developing cost-effective and eco-friendly materials. The chapter also addresses potential challenges in commercializing starch-based films in the food industry and suggests future research directions in this promising field.
