In this chapter we list various historical facts in relation to the beginnings of mathematics and geometry in particular. Starting from prehistory and crossing the first Mesopotamian civilisations, the Indians and the Chinese, the Greeks and the Arabs, we end up in the nineteenth century with the strict foundation of geometry by Hilbert and the revolutionary idea of Klein as it was described in the Erlangen Programme.
