Chapter “Money, Finance and Value in Sade” concerns Sade’s philosophy of money and finance. Its principal concerns are (i) the Sadean commitment to a credit theory of money, (ii) his critique of utility theory, (iii) his relationship to later thinkers in this domain, such as Marx, Simmel, Knapp and Bataille, and (iv) the various properties he attributes to money (amorphic, autogenetic, proclamatory, etc.). It demonstrates that these conclusions follow from Sade’s anti-phenomenological perspective, and views on quantity and quality as metaphysical categories. It contrasts this perspective with that of modern thinkers such as Bergson.
