A Composite Indicator to Measure the Economic and Financial Health of Digital Platforms
摘要
This chapter introduces the Economic and Financial Health Index (EFHI), a composite indicator designed to assess the economic performance and resilience of digital platforms. Traditional metrics such as revenue or operating margin fail to fully capture the multidimensional nature of these ecosystems. The EFHI integrates four dimensions—financial stability, profitability, investment capacity, and productivity—into a single score using the Mazziotta-Pareto method. Applying the EFHI to leading platforms, including Apple, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Netflix, Spotify, and Twitter from 2013 to 2021 reveals significant differences in financial health, strategic flexibility, and business model sustainability. Results highlight the strong performance of firms like Apple and Microsoft, in contrast with the volatility observed in companies like Netflix and Twitter. The EFHI offers a valuable tool for investors, managers, and policymakers to monitor corporate performance and identify policy needs, especially in promoting diversification, innovation, and long-term stability within the digital economy.
