Urbanization and industrialization pose significant environmental challenges in solid waste administration in many developing nations. This study aims to predict the generation of solid waste (SW) and its composition (biodegradable and non-biodegradable) over the next 20 years in Visakhapatnam city which is geographically located at 17° 42ʹ North latitude and 82° 02ʹ East longitude on the Indian Ocean coastline and a rapidly growing city in India. The current population, SW generation rates, and its composition were evaluated over 3 months. The waste was separated into different components such as food, paper, plastic, glass, construction and demolition, and miscellaneous waste. The population of Visakhapatnam city in 2022 was 22.8 lakhs in the next 20 years i.e. in 2042 the population of Visakhapatnam was estimated to be around 50 lakhs by geometric increase method. The waste generated in 2022 is 372 kilotons. In our study, it was predicted that the total amount of waste would be 817 kilotons by 2042 in proportion to population growth. The results indicate that waste generation will double in the next 20 years and efficient waste management is necessary.
