Adsorptive Removal of Methylene Blue and Congo Red in Binary Solute Using Raw Rice Husk as a Low-Cost Adsorbent
摘要
The present study investigates the efficiency of using raw rice husk (RRH) as a low cost adsorbent for the removal of cationic dye methylene blue (MB) and anionic dye congo red (CR) in a binary solute from an aqueous solution. Different combinations of dyes were used to check the adsorption capacity of RRH. The adsorption experiments were carried out using 300 mg/L dye concentration at an adsorbent dosage of 40 g/L and pH 6 at a temperature of 30 °C. Batch sorption experiments were used to determine the effect of equilibrium time, adsorbent dosage, pH, electrolyte concentration, initial dye concentration and agitation speed. Isotherm equilibrium was well described by both Langmuir and Freudlich isotherm models. The equilibrium time was found to be 1 h. Depending on the combinations of dyes used, the percentage removal of dyes varied from 76 to 98%. The pH range 6–7.9 was found to be most favourable for adsorption for MB and CR dyes respectively.
