The primary function of the colon is to regulate fluid and electrolytes in the Gastrointestinal system (GI). Disorders of the colon are often associated with various rheumatologic conditions. They can cause progressive fibrosis and muscle atrophy, impairing proper GI motility. Rheumatologic diseases can also cause formation of a colon thrombus or vasculitis, leading to compromised blood flow resulting in colon ischemia. Even treatments for Rheumatologic conditions, notably NSAIDs, can cause mucosal injury, ulcer formation, and GI bleed. Management guidelines vary depending on the specific colonic disorder.
