The pharynx is an important structure of both the respiratory and digestive tracts as well as secretion production and vocal resonance. An understanding of both normal and abnormal swallow anatomy and physiology is important in identifying and managing those with dysphagia. Although not the only symptom, oropharyngeal dysphagia may be present in vasculitic and rheumatologic conditions. Complications from dysphagia may impact both the disease progression and prognosis. A team approach is necessary for proper management and care of these patients.

摘要

The pharynx is an important structure of both the respiratory and digestive tracts as well as secretion production and vocal resonance. An understanding of both normal and abnormal swallow anatomy and physiology is important in identifying and managing those with dysphagia. Although not the only symptom, oropharyngeal dysphagia may be present in vasculitic and rheumatologic conditions. Complications from dysphagia may impact both the disease progression and prognosis. A team approach is necessary for proper management and care of these patients.
