John J. Parker’s 1920 gubernatorial campaign may not have ended in victory, but in many ways, it was a breakthrough moment. He shattered records, earning more votes than any Republican in North Carolina history and securing the second-highest total ever recorded in the state. However, one moment from the campaign, a speech in which he opposed Black participation in the political process would come back to haunt him when he was nominated for the Supreme Court.
