The Russian propaganda machine is effectively operating on the information front to discredit Ukrainian refugees by spreading unreliable information about them. In this way, propagandists attempt to reduce support for Ukrainian citizens in the countries that have provided them with shelter. Such discrediting messages can be seen not only in the media but more frequently on social networks. Russian users also pick up on this, sharing similar posts and commenting on them. The propaganda aims to create an image of Ukrainians as socially, culturally, economically, and even epidemiologically dangerous citizens. First of all, the Russians are intimidating the Western audience that Europeans will have to make large-scale financial injections to support Ukrainians. Refugees are portrayed as a burden on the economy of countries, as people who allegedly do not want to work but only live off the aid from the host country, while Europeans will have to pay for their carefree lives. There are also rumours circulating that Ukrainians behave impudently and ungratefully. Information is also spread about negative attitudes towards Ukrainian refugees in host European countries. A separate topic for discreditation is the behaviour of Ukrainians and their adaptation. Rumours spread online, suggesting that refugees do not know how to behave properly, act as uncultured people, and stand out sharply among civilised Europeans. Allegedly, Ukrainians have difficulty adapting and finding their place among local population. In addition, Russian media outlets spread rumours that the epidemiological situation has worsened with the arrival of refugees. Specifically, they suggest that the number of HIV infections has increased due to Ukrainians. The main goal of such messages is to discredit Ukrainians in order to discourage Europeans from supporting them.
