To understand the intersection of gender and migration requires an expansion of one’s worldview from only noticing challenges faced by women but also bearing witness to the ways they build their resilience. Zimbabwean immigrant women have established modalities of community, hushamwari, and mutual aid to alleviate the state of liminality and marginalization in the city of Johannesburg. In South Africa similar to the other settler colonial countries such as the United States, and the former colonial powers in Europe, unwanted immigrants are a particular race. The differing reactions to the ‘migration crisis’ in the Mediterranean Sea and the Ukrainian conflict illustrates this. Migration throughout Southern Africa, and especially that of Zimbabwean women, is inextricably linked with colonial and capitalist histories along with present-day politicking. The interrelation of gender and migration needs to be theorized through the lens of social justice, Afro-feminism, and decoloniality.
