Establishing a connection with the parents from the moment the baby is admitted to the NICU is as crucial as the critical care that we provide to the baby. No one answer fits all. Our answers to the parents’ questions are driven from our understanding of what this particular parent can handle. Gaining the trust of the parents is not guaranteed until they sense our honesty, transparency, and compassion; in addition to our knowledge and experience. Many parents’ responses surprise us and many more teach us lessons on what we should or should not say. When it comes to delivering bad news, they can mostly see how we tell it rather than what we tell them.
