Neonatologists are frequently asked to speak to parents who are expecting their infant to be admitted to the NICU. Some of these consultations can be straightforward when discussing common NICU problems; others can be very challenging to conduct. Consultations when the baby is expected to be delivered at a gestational age at the limit of viability are often filled with sensitive discussions and variety of emotions. Advancement in prenatal testing leading to detecting abnormalities in the fetus resulted in fewer surprises in the delivery room and parents being more prepared for a baby with potential problems. This has also led to adjusting the delivery plans so the baby can be delivered where the NICU is equipped to handle their needs. There are different levels of NICUs based on the care provided at a given NICU.
