Taking its cues from the underlying stoic definition of techne which informs both Hermogenes’ and the Byzantine commentators’ approach to rhetoric, this contribution offers a study of the conceptual metaphors grounding the terminology of the Hermogenian tradition. By exploring notions of spatiality and temporality, it focuses on methodos in the context of staseis shedding light on the learning processes underlying Byzantine engagements with the Corpus. This chapter shows that space and mapping become framing elements in the commentary tradition, determining metaphorical expressions and exegetical attitudes that contribute to the “poetics of the commentaries.” Concurrently, it demonstrates that the idea of progress, subsumed by the concept of τέχνη, paves the way to notions of incremental innovation, which find in the Hermogenian commentaries a fertile breeding ground.

摘要
