A Psychological Perspective on Higher Education Research

This chapter comprehensively examines the application of the Psychological perspective in higher education research (HER). It begins by outlining the research objectives of this perspective and delves into its specific applications within the realm of HER, with a focus on three key areas: college student learning and development, academic training for graduate students, and academic career development of faculty. Furthermore, the chapter explores three distinct strengths that offered by this particular perspective, which enable holistic, typological, and longitudinal investigation within the field. It demonstrates that researchers have extensively leveraged psychological concepts and theoretical frameworks, and techniques to enrich HER. Finally, the chapter summarizes the development trends and challenges confronting the psychological perspective in HER.
