In the era in which we witnessed the establishment of the first political partypolitical party driven by Artificial IntelligenceArtificial Intelligence (AIAI), where politicians already have given AI-generated speeches, understanding the mechanisms by which AI technologiesAI technologies impact the discourses that persuade the public is of major importance. AI could intervene in both the content and the form of political rhetoricpolitical rhetoric, generating a powerful AI-based persuasion (DehnertDehnert, and MongeauMongeau, 2022) which acts as “a symbolic processsymbolic process” that leads to a new communicative economy. The use of AI as ghostwriterghostwriter or as a recognised co-author is fundamentally transforming the political rhetorical culturepolitical rhetorical culture. In this vein, our study highlights the contemporary entanglement of politics with AI, emphasising the technological situatedness of political rhetoricrhetoric (DilletDillet, 2022). The “rhetorical situationsrhetorical situations” (MartinMartin, 2014) are now expanded through AI use in an effective co-creation, where AI becomes a strategic tool and active agent that shapes public opinionpublic opinion. By adopting this conceptual framework, this chapter critically evaluates the ways in which generative AI technologies question traditional notions of authorshipauthorship, authenticityauthenticity, and agencyagency in political communicationpolitical communication. To understand the mechanisms by which AI technologies impact political discourse, we interviewed political speechwriters working for the Presidential Administration and Government Officials in RomaniaRomania (N = 10). Engaging directly with experienced professionals in the field, this qualitative approach enables a nuanced exploration of ethicalethical considerations, challenges, practices, and potential solutions associated with the integration of AI technology into the crafting of political messages. Through thematicthematic and interpretiveinterpretive content analysis, the chapter uncovers both surface-level trends and deeper socio-cultural influences, offering insights into AI’s role in reshaping political rhetoric.
