Railway communication systems play a vital role in the economic development of many countries. Similarly, Bangladesh Railway has significant impact in the overall economic development for its low-cost transportation in agricultural commodities and industrial products. Dhaka Metro Rail is one of the biggest projects of Bangladesh Railway. The objective of the present study is to find the geographic location, probable economic impact, and perception of people about Dhaka Metro Rail. Both primary and secondary data were used in this study. To investigate the people’s perception about Dhaka Metro Rail, a self-administered questionnaire was developed through literature review and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Data was analyzed using appropriate statistical techniques. Dhaka Metro Rail has some unique geographical features including that a total of 5 Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) lines (MRT 1, 2, 4, 5, 6) have been proposed where MRT line 6 is already operational. It is a 20-km-long route from Dhaka North (Uttara) to Dhaka South (Motijheel). The line runs parallel to the Turag River in the west and curves as it moves south-east in the Buriganga River. It has a unique feature of 24 six-car train sets made of lightweight and highly durable stainless steel. The travel time is approximately 45 minutes for the mentioned route. The other MRT lines (lines 1, 2, 4, 5) are in the planning and construction stages. Dhaka Metro Rail has some positive economic aspects including the creation of new job, business around the stations, technological advancement, decentralization, etc. Most importantly, it will reduce traffic time and congestion on the road which will give people more time to work. It is estimated that about 35,000 crore-taka will be saved by Dhaka Metro Rail annually. From the survey results, it is found that people have highly positive perception about the Dhaka Metro Rail since it is expected that it will bring lot of positive amenities for the well-being of the people in Dhaka. Things are elaborately discussed in the paper.
