It might be strange to have someone who lives on a small island in the middle of the North Atlantic to write an introduction to a book on railways edited and mostly authored by researchers from India. What we have in common is that we are all scientists who like to do research and to learn from each other. In this perspective, I take the attitude of a learner who wants to know what is the functioning, impacts, effects and prospective dreams of the railway system, furthermore, when it complements the ocean system of transportation. Beyond this outline, this introduction synthesizes the various contributions from a chapter reviewer perspective.
