Path #4: De-privileging Psychology
摘要
The claim that psychology has a liberal bias is a powerful conservative tactic that directs attention away from the field’s fundamentally conservative nature. This false stereotype helps maintain the status quo by discouraging psychologists from engaging in political discourse and empowering conservatives to preserve traditionalist, capitalist worldviews. It presents liberals as irrational and deserving of contempt. The claim itself is empirically weak, based on anecdotal evidence and a flawed, Western-centric definition of ‘liberal’. The field’s methods, which focus on individuals and use tools with eugenicist roots, reinforce privilege and existing societal inequalities. To improve, psychology must embrace its inherent values of transparency, accuracy, and rigour and actively align itself with social justice, equality, and diversity.
