Mechanisms of Whiteness
摘要
Psychology’s overwhelming focus on WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialised, Rich, Democratic) populations creates a fundamental racial bias, as these societies are predominantly White. This Eurocentric perspective is not merely a sampling error but a form of academic colonialism. The field’s infrastructure, from leading journals to grant agencies, is headquartered in the West, forcing non-White global academics to conform to its priorities to gain recognition. This system inherently privileges White-majority concerns and methodologies, marginalising alternative knowledge systems and the psychological realities of the global majority. Consequently, psychology functions as a tool of cultural hegemony, reinforcing global power imbalances under the guise of universal science while its discussions of bias often omit the central role of Whiteness, perpetuating a ‘White saviour’ narrative.
