Example #4: By Stigmatising Negativity
摘要
Psychology’s consideration of mental ‘positivity’ is politically charged, framing ‘negative’ attitudes as unhealthy and disordered. This perspective is amplified by Positive Psychology, which promotes optimism and dismisses negativity. However, negatively valenced emotions, such as reasoned anger at injustice, are protective mechanisms crucial for promoting social cohesion and empathy. By pathologising dissent and distress, Positive Psychology reinforces conservative values: it individualises well-being and suggests that happiness is a goal achievable through personal mental adjustment rather than societal change. This approach commodifies contentment, benefits the self-help industry, and discourages critiques of the status quo, blaming individuals rather than systems for personal unhappiness.
